Max Mausen began his studies at a local music school and later at the Conservatoire de Musique de Luxembourg with Marcel Lallemang. He later also studied jazz with Roby Glod and David Laborier. After having acquired a Diplome Superieur in clarinet and a Diplome du Premier Prix in bass clarinet and chamber music, he went on to study in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he is currently studying with Julian Farrell and Andrew Webster. Max is also studying jazz clarinet with Malcolm Miles.

Max is a keen performer of contemporary music, working together with young composers including Chris Lewis, Tom Bassett, Peter Yarde Martin and Raymond Yiu. In the near future, he will be working with contemporary music ensemble 'United Instruments of Lucilin'. They will premiere a work by Luxembourgish jazz musician and composerPascal Schumacher.

Max has been a soloist with the Latvian Chamber Orchestra, Guildhall UBU ensemble, Orchestre du Conservatoire de musique de Luxembourg and Luxembourg Clarinet Choir. Max has worked with ensembles and orchestras including United instruments of Lucilin, Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg (as an intern), Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, Estro Armonico, Les Musiciens under conductors including Heinz Holliger, Lawrence Foster, Benjamin Pope and Gustavo Dudamel.
